Outdoor Lighting Scores Big Win in Survey

As the preeminent designer and installer of outdoor lighting systems in our area, we’re well aware of the value that outdoor lighting offers to homeowners. And we’re very aware that outdoor lighting is quite popular among homeowners, too. That’s why business has been so good!

But the results of a recent survey show that there’s another group that gives a big thumbs-up to the benefits of outdoor lighting: landscape architects.

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is the professional organization of landscape architects. The ASLA has more than 15,000 members, and has been in existence for more than 100 years. I think it’s safe to say that the group represents a high degree of expertise when it comes to landscape architecture!

The Survey Says…

Each year the ASLA surveys their membership about current landscape architecture trends. The goal of the survey is to inform membership and consumers about the hottest trends in landscape design. The survey accomplishes that goal by asking respondents to rate the popularity of various outdoor design elements.

And the results of the 2014 survey held just a few months ago showed that outdoor lighting is a BIG winner in the opinion of professional landscape architects.

In fact, outdoor lighting was THE winner of the 2014 survey, with a popularity rating of 98.3%. Of all the outdoor design elements that members we’re asked about – landscape features, outdoor recreation amenities, and all the other categories pertaining to outdoor architecture – NOTHING exceeded the popularity rating of outdoor lighting.

And the category of outdoor lighting was up against some very stiff competition!

For example, you’d consider terraces, patios and decks to be very popular outdoor amenities, right? Indeed they are, and they scored very high in the survey – but not as high as outdoor lighting. The same is true for other popular amenities such as outdoor seating/dining areas, outdoor pools and spas, outdoor grills and fireplaces, outdoor furniture, and many other amenities. All very popular, and all scored very high.

But nothing – absolutely nothing – was considered a more important feature for landscape architecture than outdoor lighting.

No Surprise to Us

The results of the 2014 ASLA survey certainly don’t come as a surprise to those of us at TLC Inc. And we’re sure that the survey results will come as no surprise to our many happy customers who are now enjoying all of those benefits that contribute to the popularity of outdoor lighting.

But it’s still nice to get a big thumbs-up from thousands of the world’s leading outdoor design experts!
