What’s the Best Way to Water my Garden? Drip vs Spray

From the desk of Bob Carr:

Spray Heads vs Drip Irrigation

Customer Question: “Bob, you’ve been in business 42 years. What’s better for my garden — spray heads or drip irrigation? I’ve got roses, shrubs, annuals, perennials, and even a vegetable garden. Should I use drip, micro-drip, or spray heads?”

Answer from Bob Carr:

That’s a great question, and one I’ve been asked thousands of times over the past four decades. The truth is, there’s no single “right answer” — it depends on what plants you’re watering and what outcome you want. Here’s how I look at it:

• Shrubs & Roses – Roses and shrubs do best with drip irrigation (or micro-drip). It delivers water right at the root zone, slowly and deeply, which helps prevent fungus on the leaves and keeps the water where the plant needs it most.

• Annuals & Perennials – These thrive with spray or micro-spray heads because they usually cover beds with many plants grouped close together. A light spray mimics rainfall, keeping everything evenly watered.

• Vegetable Gardens – Vegetables love drip lines or micro-drip tubing. It’s efficient, prevents disease, and keeps the foliage dry. You’ll also save water because it won’t evaporate off the leaves.

• Combination Approach – In most gardens, the best solution is a blend of both systems. We’ll design spray heads where you want that blanket coverage and drip irrigation where precision watering is needed.

Spray Heads vs Drip vs Micro-Sprays: Quick Comparison

System Type Best For Benefits
Spray Heads Annuals, Perennials, Groundcovers Covers large areas, mimics rainfall
Drip Tubing Shrubs, Roses, Vegetables Efficient, water directly at roots, reduces disease
Micro-Sprays Flower beds, containers, mixed plantings Precise coverage, gentle watering

My recommendation after 42 years: If you really want a healthy, water-efficient, easy-to-manage garden, go with a custom combination of spray heads and drip irrigation. That way, every plant type gets exactly what it needs. And with today’s technology, we can even tie the whole system into a smart controller so your roses, perennials, and vegetable beds each get the perfect amount of water automatically.

At TLC, we’ve been installing, upgrading, and maintaining irrigation systems in the DMV area for 42 years. We know what works in our climate, and we’d be glad to come out, walk your garden with you, and design the system that’s perfect for your roses, shrubs, annuals, perennials, and vegetables.
